What am I doing when I am not thinking and writing about, planning, preparing, and training for, or actually hiking? I'm so glad you asked! I am 3D printing of course! I purchased a printer early in retirement thinking: I am really not a crossword or jigsaw puzzle kind of guy. What can I do instead? Since I already spent plenty of time in the garage in my high-tech workshop, adding a 3D printer to my collection of high-tech gear seemed like a good fit! And just like my credit score, I am always looking for more ways to increase my nerd score. Check out this YouTube video to experience the nerdyness yourself. And if you are wondering if girls can be nerds too. yes they can!
I am currently printing 12 small water pitchers for my wife.
What will Eva be doing with them is a secret so if I told you, then I would have to kill you, but talking about killing people on the internet is not OK, so we'll just pretend that never happened. Each one takes approximately 8 hours and I have to stand there and watch the entire process...just kidding. After printing, I will sand, paint, and seal the prints...all good nerd-safe activities. I might even wear a mask while I sand and paint.
Do you NEED me to print something for you? If I can find a model of what you want on the internet, I can print it and I tell my wife all the time, you can find anything on the internet! And just in case you aren't excited enough, the plastic filament comes in many different colors so dream big, pick a color, and let me know what you need!
Check out this time-lapse video of my printer at work! This is eight hours compressed into one minute!
When my printer is active you can watch it here. (Just in case you are retired too and all the paint is dry at your house.)
There are laser cutting machines and wood carving machines...excellent birthday or Christmas presents, don't you agree? (Let me know and I can share my Amazon wish list.) And when my wife balks at me buying another machine for my workshop, I threaten to buy a motorcycle and suddenly she seems fine with my ever-expanding workshop!
