Hi, my name is...

The long-distance hiking community has a tradition of bestowing trail names on fellow hikers. On May 2, 2014, at mile 137 on the Pacific Crest Trail I was named Butterfingers by a group of hikers I was eating dinner with. I could tell you the story, or I could just give you a link to the primary source, my 2014 blog. Here is a good blog post on the history and practice of trail names.

The most popular thru-hiking names include:

Nine years and 6,000+ miles later, I am still introducing myself to other hikers as Butterfingers. I've thought about retiring the name and inviting a new one, but I have grown fond of it so I'll keep it for now. People sometimes assume I got the trail name because I like the candy bar. I do like the candy bar, and since it is gluten-free, I can still eat the candy bar! And speaking of the candy bar, what if I told you the Butterfinger candy bar is 100 years old this year! Want to know more?

I'll be eating a few butterfingers on the AZT to celebrate my namesake. And if you find me referring to myself as or signing posts as Butterfingers, now you know why! I'll try to take a few "man eating candy on trail" pictures for you to enjoy so stay tuned!

Thanks for following along!
