Why Trails

I hate sitting. I love walking. I listen better, think better, process my feelings better, solve problems better, and even relax better while walking. A dirt trail is best, but a canal embankment, asphalt bike path, or even a concrete sidewalk will suffice when a proper trail is not available.

Alfred Wainwright wrote a famous set of trail guides from 1953 to 1966 entitled: A Pictorial Guide To The Lakeland Fells and they are still in print! Beautiful trail descriptions and hand-drawn illustrations make these guides popular today when guidebooks have all but been replaced by GPS hiking apps. These books would make an excellent Christmas gift if you have any hiking friends...

In recounting a hike in the Lakeland Fells in England at the age of 23 Wainwright recounts: "I just couldn't believe such beauty could exist. It made a whole world of difference to me. It changed my life and I decided right then that this is the place I wanted to live."

Here are a couple of good podcasts about trails. The first gives a lot more information about Alfred Wainwright and his trail guides. They are even better to listen to while out for a walk!
