The Mystery of the Traveling AirPods

My AirPods have been found and are being mailed home to Eva! They will arrive before she leaves to meet me in Phoenix and I'll have them for the remainder of my hike!

Here's the story as best I can piece it together! As previously reported, I lost them on the south rim of the Grand Canyon while repacking my backpack after getting my resupply box at the post office  I dropped the case under the picnic table and someone nearby noticed and picked it up and handed it to me. I thanked them and packed the case away. I didn’t think to check if the AirPods were still inside. By the time I noticed the AirPods were missing and checked the Find My app, one of them was already miles away.

Approximately two weeks later, I received a notice from the Find My app that the AirPods have been found, and the person, a tourist from Europe, Martin, wanted to return them to me! By text he told me he found them in a casino in Las Vegas. What are the odds of that happening? How they got to Vegas is still a mystery. I was also confused why he had both of them, but I’m now thinking the battery in one of them was dead, so it didn’t report it was on the move with the other one. (I only hike with one earbud at a time to be aware of my surroundings, so one probably had a very low battery.)

I shared my address with Martin and now UPS has my AirPods, safe in a pretty white bubble wrap envelope. I reimbursed him by PayPal and said thank you an embarrassing number of times!

How’s that for an unlikely but very happy ending! Thanks Apple for making this reunion possible and thanks AGAIN to Martin, who made it a reality!

And thank YOU for following along!
