The Ouachita Trail

My next hike will be the Ouachita Trail. But before we talk about the trail, how about we learn how to pronounce it.

Below are some great links to learn about the trail.

Check out this 25 minute 2023 thru-hike video that I watched in preparation for my hike.

I decided to hike the Ouachita Trail for several reasons: It is an early season hike and the mountains in my neck of the woods are still covered in snow. I also look forward to visiting two states I have not previously explored. But the main draw is hiking a trail that is similar to the Appalachian Trail. Many of my long distance hiking friends who have hiked the Pacific Crest Trail and the Continental Divide Trail have also hiked the Appalachian Trail which is considered the triple crown of hiking. I decided that a two week hike would be a good way to personally find out if the AT is for me. How is the OT like the AT? I asked AI and this is what I got:
  • Terrain and Ruggedness: Both trails feature a series of steep ascents and descents. The Ouachita Mountain range, like the Appalachian Mountain range, offers challenging terrain with rugged section.
  • Scenic Views: While the Ouachita Trail may not be as well-known as the Appalachian Trail, it still provides beautiful views. Massive swaths of unbroken pine-oak forests, rocky outcroppings, and new AT-style shelters contribute to the scenic experience.
  • Thru-Hiking Experience: Thru-hiking either trail requires determination, endurance, and a love for the outdoors. Both trails offer a sense of accomplishment and adventure.
  • Solitude: The Ouachita Trail avoids towns and roads, resulting in true solitude. Similarly, parts of the Appalachian Trail provide remote stretches away from civilization.
  • In summary, both trails share challenging terrain and scenic beauty, but the Ouachita Trail offers a more secluded experience in a shorter distance. The Appalachian Trail, with its rich history and iconic status, remains a classic choice for thru-hikers.
